Is It Harder For Seniors To Lose Weight?

Reasons why it is harder for seniors to lose weight.

As we get older, it is harder to lose weight. This is because as we age, our metabolism starts to slow down. If the metabolism is lower then older people are less likely to be able to keep weight off of their bodies. Here are some reasons why it is harder for seniors to lose weight.

Physical Activity Decreases

Seniors are less active than younger adults. Most seniors are now retired and do not work full time jobs. Walking every day, jogging, or even swimming can be hard for seniors. Many have bone and joint issues so they just sit at home all day. If they are spending most of their time sitting and watching television then they are more likely to eat a lot of junk food and not get any fresh air or exercise.

Seniors Go to Bed Earlier

Seniors often go to bed earlier than they would have when they were working adults. Many seniors become tired much more easily than younger adults. This means that they will sleep more and are less likely to go out and do errands where at least they could walk around and get some physical activity.

Income Level Goes Down

Many seniors are on a fixed income; this means that they often are looking to buy cheap meals. This means that they are more likely to buy prepared meals such as TV dinners, pastries, and canned soups and pastas. These food items contain a lot of salt, preservatives, fat, calories, and carbohydrates. These things consumed in higher amounts are bad for the health of seniors and can cause them to gain weight. Senior citizens need to consume more milk, cheese, vegetables, proteins, and grains in their daily diets.

There are many reasons why it is harder for seniors to lose weight. It is important for seniors to see a dietary specialist so that they can put together a meal and exercise plan so that the senior can lose weight.
