If I Am Over 100 lbs. Overweight, Can I Get help To Lose Weight

Being overweight can be frustrating. With all of the fad diets and gimmicks available, confusion persists about how to lose weight safely and keep it off.

Talk with a doctor

Anyone who has tried unsuccessfully to lose weight, especially someone who is more than one hundred pounds overweight should talk with their health care provider to determine if the weight issue is related to a medical problem. A physician can order tests to rule out medical issues that affect a person’s inability to lose weight. If there is no medical reason for the weight problem, there are options that can lead to successful weight loss.

Evaluate the amount and types of foods consumed

Prior to beginning a new weight loss plan, it is a good idea to take a look at the type and amount of food consumed. Many people do not have a realistic view of their own eating habits. Keeping a food diary that lists everything that is consumed including food, drinks and even the smallest morsel can help a very overweight person evaluate their eating habits. As a result they will probably learn that they are consuming a lot more calories than they expend. Some people may need to see a Registered Dietitian to help them evaluate their eating habits.

Steps to successful weight loss for persons more than 100 pounds overweight

To lose weight a person must burn off more calories than they consume. This can be accomplished through eating very healthy foods such as lean meat, lots of fruits and vegetables without added sugar and fat, low-fat dairy products and whole grains which provide fiber. It is important to watch portion sizes and avoid overeating, even when eating healthy. Physical activity or exercise is a must because this is where the fat burning power comes into play. A person who is trying to lose weight should aim for about 90 minutes of exercise most days of the week. This could be brisk walking or aerobics along with strength training to build lean muscles.

For the overweight person who has earnestly tried to lose weight without success

There are surgical options such as lapband surgery or gastric bypass surgery. Both alter the size of the stomach which prevents the individual from overeating. A doctor will evaluate persons interested in these options to determine if they are suitable candidates.
