Why Is There A 5 Month Wait Time for Social Security Disability Benefits?
Disability Benefits – What You NEED to know to get Social Security Disability benefits.
About Social Security Disability Benefits
No one ever wants to have to rely on disability benefits, but sometimes the unexpected happens and we are unable to work. Fortunately for Americans, the government is there for you. The Social Security and Supplemental Security Income Disability programs are the largest Federal programs that provide assistance to Americans with who are unable to work due to a disability. A number of states provided disability benefits to their residents until 1974 when Richard Nixon nationalized the system. You can now find information on the federal disability programs at http://www.socialsecurity.gov/disability where a number of disability starter kits are available.
Social Security Waiting Period
Social Security and Supplemental Security Income benefits are not immediate. If you were to get hurt on a Tuesday, you will not receive benefits on Wednesday. The Social Security administration states that Social Security benefits can only be paid out once a worker has been disabled and unable to work at their old job or a new job for a five month period. This effectively creates five month wait time where where no benefits can be paid out. Many people call this the five month “waiting period”.
Why a Waiting Period?
The reason for this period is that the social security benefits are intended to aid people who have long-term disabilities. For short term disabilities workers should have access to workers’ compensation, insurance and a savings account. The social security disability benefits are aimed at people who, as the result of a disability, are no longer able to do the work they had previously performed and they are unable to adjust to other work due to a medical condition which is expected to last for more than a year. The social security disability program acts a great safety net for people who are disabled for a period longer than their insurance, savings and workers’ compensation would support them.
