Who Gets Social Security Disability Benefits?

There are two types of Social Security disability benefits that are available. The first is a program designed to help working adults who become disabled. The second program is for disabled children. If your child is born disabled or becomes disabled before the age of 22 they have the ability to receive Social Security disability benefits to help pay for their care. If a working adult becomes disabled, that person is entitled to a disability payment. If they remain disabled for the remainder of their lives, this disability payment will convert over to a retirement benefit at the appropriate age.

Is There Any Work Requirements Necessary To Receive Social Security Disability Benefits?

If the person applying for Social Security Disability is considered a minor there are no work history requirements. If a person becomes disabled between the ages of 22 and 24 they must have at least a year and a half of work history to collect benefits. If the disability occurs between the ages of 24 and 31 there must be at least three years worth of work history attached to the person’s record. Over the age of 31 the person must have at least five years worth of credits to qualify for the program.

How Long Does It Take To Receive Social Security Disability benefits?

When an adult applies for Social Security disability benefits they will be required to wait at least five months before being approved for the program. The SSA believes that this period of time is sufficient to prove whether the disability is permanent. Most people that apply for the benefits will face at least two full years of going back and forth with the Social Security Administration before being approved for the program.
