What Types Of Social Security Cards Does SSA Issue?

Currently the SSA issues 3 types of social security cards. They all bear the applicant’s name and ssn. Citizenship and work status determine which card you will be issued.

What are the differences between these 3 types of cards.?

The differences are what is printed on the cards. All three card types have the card holder’s name and assigned social security number printed on it. If you are a U. S. Citizen or an alien lawfully admitted to the USA on a permanent basis, this is all that is printed on the card.

What is printed on the social security cards of resident aliens?

For aliens admitted to the USA on a temporary basis, “VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION.” is printed if they have authorization to work in the USA from the Department of Homeland Security. DHS will provide documents to substantiate this for employers.

What is printed on the Social Security card for aliens who are legally allowed to reside in the USA but do not have DHS work authorization.

For these people “NOT VALID FOR EMPLOYMENT” is printed on their cards. These are issued to people who have a valid need for a social security number besides work requirements. Alien students are a good example. They come to the USA to study for several years, usually 4 or more depending on their course of study. They often will have cars so they will need a driver’s license which requires a social security number in most states. Many students also need bank accounts to handle their scholarships and other funds for living expenses. USA banks are required by the Patriot Act to get a social security number from anyone opening an account. This allows foreign students to handle their financial affairs with a minimal amount of expenses.
