How is Social Security protecting Social Security numbers?

How is Social Security protecting Social Security numbers? Can I still replace my lost Social Security card? Are the states protecting my Social Security number?

The Social Security Administration is going to great lengths to protect an individuals Social Security number. The Administration has removed the number from all their mailings to individual persons and has also removed the number from all checks issued by the Social Security Administration. In an effort to comply with the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004, the Social Security Administration has made more stringent rules for applying for and receiving a new number. They have changed the printing method to avoid counterfeit duplication and they have placed a limit on replacement cards.

Can I still replace my lost Social Security Card?

If you have lost your Social Security card you can get a replacement by visiting your local Social Security Office or reapplying online. There is a restriction now on how many times you can replace a lost card. This restriction is part of an Anti-terrorism bill that was designed to keep real cards from being reissued to “fake” people. If you misplace your card too often you will not be able to have a new one reissued. You should always keep your card in a safe place.

What are the States doing to protect my Social Security number?

Each state has already been required by the Social Security Administration to remove Social Security numbers from driver’s licenses. The Social Security Administration is working with each individual state to make the usage of Social Security numbers as safe for the citizen as possible. Removing Social Security numbers from mailings or any other type of communication that can be intercepted has been the first goal of the Social Security Administration and each of the states.
