For many years now it has been required that a newborn child should have a Social Security number. This number is required for identification purposes as well as for entry into the public school system. Getting a Social Security number and card is not difficult to do at all. You will need to either locate your local Social Security office or go online to the official website and fill out the application form. You will then need to either take it with all the documentation asked for to your local Social Security office or send it through the mail.

What documents are needed?

Documents that will be accepted for United States citizenship are:
• United States birth certificate
• United States consular report of birth
• United States passport
• Certificate of Naturalization or Certificate of Citizenship

Documents for non-citizen:
• Form I-551 with machine –readable immigrant visa including the unexpired foreign passport.
• I-94 along with your current foreign passport
• Department of Homeland Security work permit card

Proof of identity
• United States driver’s license
State issued non-driver identification card
• United States passport

How do I get a Social Security number

By taking the required documentation to your local Social Security office or sending them through the mail, and upon review of the same documents and they pass inspection you will be able to receive a Social Security number and Card sent to you through the mail at the address indicated. In some instances, you will be required to present your card for identification purposes.
