How Do I Change My Social Security Card?

There are a few reasons why you might need to change your social security card. Whether you citizenship status changed, there is a misprint on the card, or you changed your name, changing your social security card is easy as long as you know what you need and where to go.

Gathering Your Information

In order to change your social security card you will need to gather the necessary information. You will need documents such as your birth certificate, identity, and even your proof of citizenship or immigration status. If you are changing the name on your card you need to show proof of your legal name change. After you have this information you can fill out the application called Form SS-5. This can be found online or at your local social security office.

Submitting Your Forms

Once you gather your information and fill out the correct application form you need to submit it to the correct place. You can either personally take the application to your local social security office or mail it in. Make sure that all of the documents you are submitting are either the original documents or a certified copy. Photocopies or notarized copies will not be accepted as proof.

Getting Your New Card

You will receive your new card via mail. This will most likely take a few weeks, but it depends on the time you submit your application. Your new card will only have the change you requested on it, such as your name. However, your social security number will remain the same. If you follow the simple steps above you will be able to change your social security card easily. Make sure once you get the card you keep it in a safe place and only carry it for necessary purposes.
