How Can I Get The Most Social Security?

There are two factors that the Social Security office uses to base the amount you will receive in your retirement. First is the age at which you retire. The earlier you retire the less money per month you will receive. Second, they will base your monthly allotment on the money you made during the previous 35 years. They will take the top 35 years of reported income to use in their formula that decides benefit amount. If you have several years that show zero income you will have low benefits. If you have the maximum income for 35 or more years you will receive the highest payout amount. There is a cap on the benefits that you may receive from the administration. However, this cap amount changes each year and should be verified each January by visiting their website.

How Do I Boost My Income Numbers To Get A Better Payout?

When you are filing your taxes, make sure that all your income is reported. Your Social Security credits are based on your income, and your retirement benefits are based on the highest incomes reported. If you fail to report your income you will not receive the proper credit with the Social Security Administration to be applied toward your retirement.

Can I Get Social Security Credits For Working For Myself?

If you are self employed you will receive credit toward your Social Security when you pay your federal taxes each year. The IRS has designed a way for self employed people to pay their taxes directly to them and be credited for their work. Prior to this, the Social Security Administration required separate filings to claim your work credits. Now, the process has been simplified. If you pay your federal taxes on self employment, you will receive the appropriate credits with the SSA.
