Does Social Security cover retirees only?

Social Security benefits are available to the disabled and survivors of deceased workers, and not just to retirees.

Social Security is a social insurance system that not only covers retirees, but also provides income and assistance for survivors, disabled people, and children of retirees and disabled people.

Survivor’s benefits

The spouse and children of someone who works are entitled to Social Security benefits in most cases. The main caveat is that the worker should have been employed in work covered by the Social Security system. Social Security is the largest government provider of benefits to surviving children.

Unmarried children younger than 18 are eligible for survivor’s benefits. Also dependent parents that are 62 or older qualify for these benefits. In order for parents to qualify as dependents, the worker must provide at half of their support.

Also divorced spouses who are over 59 years old (50-59 if disabled) qualify for benefits if they were married to the working spouse for 10 years or more.

Disability benefits

If you have a disability that prevents you from working, you may be eligible for Social Security benefits. Your disability must prevent you from working for at least the next 12 months and you will not receive payments until you have not worked for five months. A qualifying disability will not allow you to return to your former work, and also prevents you from taking on other work that you are reasonably qualified for.

Amount of Social Security benefits

For those who have not worked, the benefits are calculated based on the earnings of one’s working parents. Otherwise, the formula for benefits is based on the number of years you have worked and the amount you have earned.
