Can I Receive Social Security Benefits and Still Be Employed?
Continue working and receive social security benefits. Find out how to increase retirement income and qualify for Medicare and government payments.
Any person who reaches a mandatory retirement age may begin receiving social security benefits. A person who chooses to continue working is not disqualified. The rationale is that a person who earned benefits deserves a reward for continuing to work and pay income tax.
Social Security Retirement Age
The minimum age for retirement with full social security benefits is different for each person. Date of birth determines when benefits are payable. People born in 1937 and earlier become entitled at age 65. For each more recent year of birth, the administration adopts a sliding scale to determine retirement age. For example, a person born on 1938 must wait until 65 years and two months of age before receiving full benefits. A person who was born in 1960 must wait until age 67 to receive full benefits.
Filing Applications
The Social Security Administration does not automatically begin sending monthly checks when a person reaches retirement age. Benefits become payable only after electing to receive benefits, in writing, and filing an application with the agency. A few people choose either early retirement or to delay receipt of payments. Because of these options, each applicant must advise the agency of a preferred date for payments to begin.
Delayed Retirement
A person who chooses to delay applying for social security payments does not lose benefits. The amount of monthly payments eventually received after applying increases each year. The rationale for the increase in payments is to encourage all Americans to continue working as long as feasible and profitable. Once choosing to retire, income available is correspondingly higher and provides greater retirement income. This option allows each person a degree of control over the amount of benefits available.
