What Is The Future Of Home Health Care?

Should future health care include electronic medical systems that link patients to doctors or create a virtual model of care known as home tele-health?

Telemedicine, funding and a dramatically growing population are just a few of the challenges the future of home health care encompasses.

The future of home health care for seniors should include systems that make medical records as accessible as medical science. Patients should be able to carry out e-scheduling, e-visits, e-tests results and safe, consistent in-home care should be the hope of most patients.

The Future of Home Health Care Embraces Medical Homes

There is a concept, which is being tested in 44 states, called patient-centered medical homes, which intends to improve the overall quality of home health care. This concept includes round-the-clock access, patient feedback and uses of email.

The Patient Centered Primary Care Collaborative (PCPCC), a trade group that is at the forefront of the medical home movement, puts the needs of the patient first but requires greater responsibility and accountability. According to the PCPCC, the tools are now available to set up efficient tele-health processes.

Research On Future Home Health Care And Spending

Research where the focus for seniors is on home health care establishes that people live longer, seniors are healthier and patients are more satisfied with their care.

There is also a clear understanding that home health care spending will eventually exceed prescription drug growth. And the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services predict national expenditures on home health care services will reach more than $90 billion by 2014.

The percentage of the population over the age of 65 is growing dramatically, accounting for 13 percent of the population in 2000 and by the year 2030 will symbolize 20 percent of the total US population, according to the US Census Bureau.
