What is Heart Healthy Eating?

With the increase of trans-fats in many foods today, it is no wonder that many are suffering from more heart related diseases than ever before. Trans- fats or hydrogenated oil, lower the HDL level which is the good cholesterol level, while at the same time raising the LDL or bad cholesterol level. This deadly combination leads to blocked arteries, a precursor to heart disease. Selecting heart healthy foods are essential to maintaining good health. Foods rich in antioxidants, omega 3 fatty acids, and fiber are the best ways to ensure heart healthy eating.

Antioxidants

Foods rich in antioxidants eliminate free radicals which are damaging toxins that the body produces. Colorful foods such as fruits and vegetables fall into this category. Strawberries, blueberries, and spinach are all rich sources of antioxidants. A diet rich in these foods will lead to successful heart healthy eating.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids

A heart healthy diet would not be complete without Omega 3 Fatty Acids. These foods also lower the LDL or bad cholesterol and raise the HDL or good cholesterol. In addition, they also lower blood pressure. Foods containing Omega 3 fatty acids are usually foods high in protein. Salmon, tuna, almonds, and walnuts are prime examples.

Fiber

Foods rich in fiber reduce the cholesterol in the blood stream which lowers the risk for blocked arteries. This also leads to a healthier heart. Foods such as beans and oatmeal along with soy proteins, are excellent sources of fiber. These foods are essentials for heart healthy eating, and they can also improve one’s digestive tract.

Heart healthy diet begins with choosing foods rich in antioxidants, omega 3 fatty acids, and fiber. These foods not only improve the likelihood of maintaining a healthy heart, but they also significantly improve one’s overall health. This will ultimately enhance one’s life span and overall quality of life.
