As we age mental health becomes an important concern. Memory loss is common and signs of dementia begin to appear for many. But with certain activities you can increase your chances of better mental health and productive lifestyle.

Reading is one of the greatest pursuit’s for mental health and awareness. Collect magazines and books from local libraries or create a trade exchange with friends. Read everything you can get your hands on. Keep your creative functions by reading good fiction and maintain your logic by reading interesting articles on any subject from gardening to home repair.

Television.

TV game shows that require questions and answers will increase your reasoning ability and quick response. Your thought process will get the exercise it needs when forced to work at a quick pace and recall memories from the past and present.

Games.

Play games that require though about money, numbers, colors, or memory. Card games and many board games will keep you aware and thinking. They provide a wonderful way to increase your mental health, as well as provide a much needed social outlet with friends.

Paper games.

Cross word puzzles, word search, and other book games require thought and logic. They can be found in any store. Books with these types of games are now available at dollar type stores and many contain large print for the visually impaired.

Vision awareness.

To play vision awareness you only have to look at what is around you and remember each item. Start in your own home. Look in your kitchen cupboard and notice everything and where it is. Close the cupboard and repeat out loud to yourself what you saw and where it was located. Open the cupboard to see how close you came.

This game can and should be played anywhere. You can sit on your front porch, in a friends home, at the park, in a store, or just about anywhere. It is an exercise in memory and awareness. It forces the mind to concentrate and recall what you have seen and where it is located.
