However it is important to recognize that sleep does not just affect our emotional and physical well-being on a daily basis but it also affects our overall mental health over the long haul. Sleep helps the nervous system regulate itself, helps memory and cognition to happen, and also help us to process the events of our lives through dreaming.
Sleep Affects Mental Health
A lack of sleep affects a lot of aspects related to your brain functioning normally. Sleep deprivation can cause lapses in judgment, a decrease in impulse control and attention span. It makes sense that those who lack sleep may make poor decisions and demonstrate poor performance on a daily basis. Not getting enough sleep can also cause cognitive impairments that make it hard to do mathematical equations or simply make conversation. Long-term lack of sleep can lead to mental health problems including anxiety, depression and other serious mental illnesses.
How to Get a Proper Night’s Sleep
There are a few tips you can use to help prevent sleep deprivation. To get a good night’s rest attempt to go to the bed and wake up at the same time each day. Refrain from drinking coffee or other caffeinated beverages within 4 hours of bedtime and do not exercise for the 2 hours before your bedtime to keep your body relaxed. Get in a routine of drinking a cup of decaffeinated tea or reading right before bed so that your mind gets used to associating that activity with bed time.
