Here are some tips and tricks I use to protect my mental health from depression, memory loss, dementia, and alzheimer’s disease.
Can I Protect My Mental Health?
The answer is yes for most adults. Even those who are suffering from alzheimer’s disease and their caretakers have new hope these days as new research has led to new medications that show clear signs of slowing down the mental deterioration.
Avoid The Dangers of Depression
Although many people who are seniors see a glum future for themselves because they may have lost so many family members and friends, you can concentrate on the joy of living. One way of doing this is to give yourself reasons to get out of bed in the morning. Things like meeting new people, volunteering, finding a new hobby, or even teaching a class at a community center. Experience joy through the smiles of those you touch every day.
What About Memory Loss?
I can protect my mental health from memory loss by spending time several days a week talking and interacting with other people. Being a volunteer at a nursing home and helping others with fun activities is a good way to start. You can even join an adult day care center and join in or teach others crafts and games you are familiar with.
Keep Up With Current Events
Watching the news, reading newspapers or magazines is a great way I protect my mental health. It gives you topics of conversations with others, lets you express your own opinions, and keeps your mind in the here and now instead of just the past.
Hobbies
Most people have had something they liked to do such as crocheting, knitting, playing an instrument, or going out to play bingo. If you haven’t done that in a while try it. That’s how I protect my mental health.
