Will My Company Help Me Retire?
Will my company help me retire? Here are some important things you really need to know about how your company can help you to prepare for retirement.
Will my company help me retire? Once it was a common practice for companies to help their employees retire. Most any medium to large companies, and even some small companies, would offer all sorts of retirement options for their employees. Pension plans, profit sharing plans, and company stock plans were all more common in the past than today. Today difficult economical conditions are causing companies to reduce their offerings, and retirement plans are being effected. While companies sponsored pension plans, are becoming less common many companies still offer company matched retirement plans such as 401K, 403B (Government workers), and IRA plans.
In the rough economic client, will my company help me retire?
Many companies do still offer help with their employees retirement. In the past employees could sometimes count on company pension plans to completely cover their retirement planning needs. Today with most companies the most an employee can hope for is employer assistance with retirement savings. Some employers will offer matching programs up to a certain percentage of the money an employee saves. For example, if an employee puts 3% of their income into a company sponsored 401K or IRA the employer will match the amount with 3% of their own. This allows for employees to effectively double their investment up to a certain percentage of their income.
Will my company help me retire even if I lose my job?
Most 401K and IRA programs will not lose money after an employee loses their job. The money will remain in the employees account but no further deposits will be made. The money in the 401K or IRA account can then be rolled over into an account with the next employer or into a private 401K or IRA account. The money can not be withdrawn for spending without serious tax penalties.
