What should I consider when I contemplate retiring?

When you first start making plans for your retirement you should take a look at your cash flow. Look at both the amount of income that you feel you will be coming in and the expenses that you can calculate. Write it down so that you have something solid to look at. Take your time doing this so that you will be sure to get everything written down.

Set up a budget

By setting up a budget that you feel will best reflect your future cash flow you will be able to get a good idea as to whether your income will be sufficient for your retirement. Do not forget to add things when they occur to you.

Calculate your assets and debts

The value of your assets should be figured into this calculation because you may be withdrawing from them for living expenses. Your debts will usually be a monthly expense that will use a certain amount of your income. When contemplating retiring you need to know how you will meet these expenses. Speak with Social Security to get an idea what your future benefits will and calculate your total income expectations.

Other things to consider when planning for retirement are health care, learn what your pension options are from your employer, make sure your estate documents are up to date, long term care insurance may be important at this point in your life, and the list goes on. Make sure that you speak with a professional that specializes in retirement planning for their best advice.

all of these articles sound pretty good, but none of them provide any links to topics they refer to (ie: retirement calculators, etc.) at least refer people to msn money, they have a decent retirement calculator or to aarp.
