What If I Am Getting Close To Retirement And Don’t Have Enough?

Tips for those close to retirement age, but not close financially. What to do if you are unable to retire. Alternatives for those who can’t work.

When one finds themselves close to retirement age, but without enough retirement funds, there are still options for a happy life. Selling a home for equity and purchasing a smaller place, may be enough for a nice retirement fund. Working part-time or starting a business is a good option, for those who have to wait to fully retire. Downgrading a lifestyle early and working more years, will build a retirement fund quickly.

Getting Close to Retirement by Using Your Home

If a home is paid off, or has substantial equity, it can be used for additional retirement income. Selling the home and investing in a smaller house or condo is usually a good idea. A reverse mortgage can also help with retirement, but the home will be used to pay back the mortgage once it is sold or the individual is deceased.

Work as a Consultant or Start a Business

With telecommuting on the rise an individual can still retire, and make money on the side while retired. Many companies want to hire professionals, with many years of experience as consultants. Owning a home business is an option for many, who still want to be home and feel retired.

Downgrade Early

If one doesn’t have enough money and is close to retirement, they should downgrade. A budget should be looked at and analyzed for unessential monthly expenses. Renting an apartment, or selling items not used is a good start. Moving into the community one wishes to retire in, will save future moving costs. Once one downgrades they should also do something to boost their income, so retirement can be saved for quickly and efficiently.
