Three essential elements to consider when trying to decide if it’s time to retire.
Financial Strength
One of the first things you must look at when thinking, ‘Is it time to retire?’, is your financial situation. Retirement can be expensive. Without planning it can difficult. Consider your housing. Is your home paid for or will you have enough to either pay it off or live in a retirement community? Will the combination of your savings, social security and retirement benefits cover your living expenses for 20 years after retirement? If the answer is yes, then you may be ready for retirement.
Productivity
Ask yourself: Am I a productive employee? Am I and is my company satisfied with the job I am doing? There are several ways to guage productivity. Compare your productivity at your current age to your level of productivity when you felt you were doing good work. Compare your productivity to others on your job or in your field who are doing similar work. Discuss your productivity with your boss and/or a trusted co-worker(individually). If your productivity has dropped below your own or the industry’s standard because of your age,the answer to the question ‘Is it time to retire?’ is yes.
Job Satisfaction
Do you like what you are doing? Are you excited to come to work most days? If the thought of going to work does not put a smile on your face and add joy and purpose to your life it may be time to retire.
