How Do I Ensure The Safety Of My Loved Ones In A Nursing Home?

The two Secrets to Ensuring The Safety Of Your Loved Ones In A Nursing Home are: choosing the right facility and monitoring their care.

When my in-laws decided to move to a nursing home for health reasons, my biggest concern was, how do I ensure the safety of my loved ones in a nursing home? I discovered two simple steps to ease your mind and provide for the well-being of your family members.

Choosing the Right Nursing Home

Visit nursing homes in your area to see whether the residents and the facility look well cared for. Is the nursing home clean? Is the landscaping maintained? Be sure to look at nursing homes that are close to you or other family members so that a relative will be available to check in on your loved one. After you narrow the field down to one or two facilities, dig a little deeper. These businesses must maintain state licensing reports and make them available for your review. Request the opportunity to read them. You may also contact your state’s assisted living or long term care ombudsperson to learn about any substantiated complaints against the home.

Monitoring Your Loved One’s Care to Ensure Their Safety

Once you have done your due diligence and have settled your loved one into a nursing home, have a family meeting to set up a schedule of regular visits. Your loved one will enjoy the company, and from a security perspective, nothing beats visiting to ensure the safety of your loved ones in a nursing home. You and other visiting relatives should introduce yourselves to the nursing staff so you will know who to speak with if your loved one has medical complaints or if you notice a change in his or her health. Think of the staff as your partners in ensuring the safety of your family member. Together you will preserve your loved one’s health and well-being.
