Will I Be Able To Use My Current Doctors When I Start Medicare?
When an individual becomes eligible for Medicare one of the first questions that arises is about doctors. Will I have to change doctors? Can I still use my current doctors?
Most senior citizens have been going to the same doctor for years. They have build a relationship based upon experience over time. One of the greatest fears seniors have when they become eligible for Medicare is if they will be able to use their current doctors or if they will have to change doctors.
Will I Be Able To Use My Current Doctors When I Start Medicare?
In most cases the Medicare recipient will be able to use his current doctors when he starts Medicare. Medicare does not make physician choices for the Medicare beneficiary. If the Medicare recipient’s current doctors accept Medicare as a form of insurance, he may continue to use them. If the Medicare beneficiary’s current doctors opt out of accepting Medicare the patient will have to pay the cost of the office visit out of pocket.
Why Would My Current Doctor Not Accept Medicare?
Some physicians choose not to accept Medicare payments for one reason or another. Others will decline some Medicare Supplemental Insurance Plans. In some cases the reason a doctor will not accept Medicare as a form of insurance is the paperwork involved or he may feel that he cannot accept the rates set in the region by Medicare. In other cases doctors may choose not to accept Medicare because he does not have sufficient Medicare eligible patients to support hiring an office worker to handle Medicare claims.
How Will I Know If I Can Use My Current Doctors When I Start Medicare?
As an individual approaches his Medicare eligibility he should ask his doctors if they accept Medicare. If they do not the individual should ask his doctors to make referrals to those physicians who do accept Medicare. Ask the questions before turning 65. Make the necessary transitions to new doctors before Medicare starts.
