Who Qualifies For Medicare Part B?
Wondering what you need to know about Medicare Part B? What it is and if you qualify? These are the basics you need to know.
What is Part B?
Simply put Medicare Part B is the other half of the original Medicare Plan, which is known as Part A. Part B is to help you fill in gaps where your other medical insurance coverage under Part A does not pay. After meeting a deductible, you are only responsible for 20% as a co-insurance payment. Sometimes health providers agree to accept Medicare’s “reasonable charge” rate as payment in full.
So just what is covered under Part B?
Medicare Part B covers things such as home health care, diagnostic tests and x-rays, some preventive services like prostate and colon cancer screening. It also covers gynecological services including mammography screening. Flu shots, outpatient rehabilitation facility services, occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech therapy services are covered. It also covers much of what is considered durable medical equipment, which is things like blood glucose testing monitors, braces and prosthetic devices.
Then what is not covered?
Things that Medicare Part B does not cover is custodial care, eye exams for glasses or contact lenses, hearing aids, cosmetic surgery, dental services and routine physical checkups. One of the most important things that it does not cover is long term medical care in a skilled nursing facility. Many people have another insurance policy for this.
How do I go about getting coverage?
If you want Part B you must pay for it. Anyone over 65 on Medicare Part A is eligible. The best time to apply is about ten months before you turn 65. You may qualify if you are younger if you have renal disease or certain disabilities and receive Social Security. All applications are obtained and processed through the Social Security Department.
Does all this cost a lot extra?
Part B is an optional plan. You must pay a premium monthly. The premium is about $88.50 per month. The amount is deducted from your Social Security check.
