The next available dates for signing up for Medicare Part D begin on November 15, 2009 and continue through December 31, 2009. If those dates are missed the next sign up period will be the sometime during last six weeks of 2010.
How Long Does a Person Have to Decide to Sign Up for Part D?
If considering Medicare Part D the initial sign up runs for six months. It is best to sign up for Medicare Part D during the first eligibility period for Medicare coverage. The time frame for signing up during the first eligibility period includes the three months before the month the person becomes 65 (sixty-five) and the three months after the sixty-fifth birthday. The six month window of opportunity is the best time to sign up for Medicare Part D.
For the person under 65 collecting disability and covered by Medicare the window of opportunity for signing up for Medicare Part D is the three months prior to and the three months after the twenty-fifth disability payment.
However, for those who missed the initial opportunity to sign up for Medicare Part D there is a six week window in which sign ups are accepted beginning November 15, 2009.
