When Can I Switch Medicare Health Plans?
Learn about the certain times of year when you can switch your Medicare Health Plans and add or drop new changes and when they are expected to take effect.
Medicare Health Plan Changes
Medicare Health plans lock in or limit you in when you can change your Medicare Health plan during the year. You are able to switch during the Annual Coordinated Election Period. This period runs from November 15th though December 31st of every year. January 1st is when the new coverage will begin. You will be able to change your health coverage and alter changes of any choices of plan coverages.
Open Enrollment Period For Medicare Health Plans
You will be able to switch once during the Open Enrollment Period from January 1st through March 31st. Your new coverage will begin to take effect the following month. You will be unable to make any changes of Medicare drug coverages during this time. To make changes of the Medicare drug coverages, you will need to do this during the Annual Coordinated Election Period as mentioned above.
What To Do If You Move Or Your Medicare Private Health Plan Leaves Your Area
You will be able to switch to another private health plan or you can switch to the Original Medicare Plan. You will be able to cancel your Medicare Advantage Plan during this time or if you have both Medicare and Medicaid and if you live in an institution.
How To Leave A Medicare Advantage Plan
You can leave your Medicare Advantage plan and return to the Original Medicare plan at any time, however when you voluntarily leave it the Medicare Advantage Plan, you may not be able to enroll in any Medigap plans that you want. You may even have to undergo a Medical Physical Examination and pay a higher rate.
