When And How Often Can I Switch My Medicare Drug Plan?
Most Medicare drug coverage plans are chosen during open season which runs from November 15 to December 31st each year.
Under normal circumstances you are allowed to change your coverage no more than once per year during the normal open season. If you are new to Medicare and are entitled to both parts A and B you can join three months before the month you get Medicare, to three months after you get your Medicare.
Changing my drug plan outside of open season
There are certain circumstances that Medicare will allow you to choose a drug plan outside of open season. One of the reasons that Medicare will allow an off season change is if your insurance company discontinues their plan in your area. You may also change coverage if you enter, live in or leave a nursing home. If you qualify for extra help paying for your prescriptions drugs you can drop your current drug coverage. There may be other life changing events that will also make you eligible to change or add coverage outside of open season and if you experience one, the best thing to do is either visit your local Social Security office or call them at 1-800-772-1213.
Utilizing the Medicare Website for your drug coverage.
Understanding the different parts of the Medicare health and drug coverages is not easy and needs to be researched before making your decision. Research all of the different plans and compare them using a list of the drugs you are currently taking. Different plans offer different formularies and one that covers your drugs may not be listed in another plan’s formulary. That’s why it is always important to make your search of drug plans a personalized search on the Medicare website. Once you join the Medicare website there is a lot of information that can be personalized to your plans and coverages. During open season for your convenience, you can enroll or change coverage on the site.
