Medicare is one of the main health care plans and insurance coverage for senior citizens in the United States. Medicare is a government run and provided health care insurance coverage plan for those 65 and older. It is divided into four main plans ranging from A-D. One of the most important and standard Medicare plans is Plan A.

WHAT MEDICARE PLAN A COVERS

Medicare Plan A covers inpatient services such as hospital stays, nursing facility stays and some home care and hospice. Medicare Plan A is part of Original Medicare. This is different from private insurance such as HMO’s because the HMO’s restrict you to certain doctors and hospitals in their network. Medicare is very advantageous because it enables you the patient to go to any doctor and hospital you want as long as it accepts Medicare. Medicare is a fee for service policy which determines how the doctor and/or hospital is paid.

SPECIFICS OF MEDICARE PLAN A BENEFITS:



The coverage of Medicare Plan A is vast and it covers the following.

Hospital stays are among the things that are covered by Medicare Plan A. The coverage of this is dependent on the length of your hospital stay. During the first 60 days you pay a maximum of $1,024 and Medicare pays the rest. The amount you pay increases the longer you stay.

Nursing facility care is another thing that is covered by Medicare Plan A. In a nursing facility you are present there to recover from a hospital stay. Medicare only pays for the first 20 days and if you stay longer than that then you need to pay a co pay and then pay for all the costs yourself after that.

Another benefit covered by Medicare Plan A is home health care. This is done and provided if you physician tells you that you need skilled short term care while you recover from an illness or injury. If the nurses and therapists are certified by Medicare then you get health care for free. You will though have to pay 20% of the costs of medical equipment, wheelchairs and walkers.

The next benefit is hospice care. Hospice care is covered by Medicare Plan A. It is used for people who are terminally ill. The policy covers most of the cost of drugs, medical devices and other support devices. Hospice care is given at either the patient’s home or facility. Plan A also covers charges associated with short phases in a hospice facility and to treat pain and symptoms.

Medicare Plan A also covers blood transfusions where you pay for the first 3 pints and then Medicare pays 80% of the costs.

Medicare Plan A is a very essential and vital aspect and part of the health care and livelihood of elderly people. It provides many benefits and enables to cover a vast majority of the costs associated with health care including hospital visits, nursing facility stays, home health care, hospice care and blood transfusions.
