What Is The Medicare Part D Low Income Susiduary Program?
If you are eligible for Medicare Part D, you may be able to save on your prescription drug costs.
Medicare Part D is designed to help low income seniors pay for the costs of some items that normal Medicare costs do not cover. The most expensive health care cost for the average senior citizen is his prescription drug program. Medicare supplemental programs through a private insurance company may cover the costs of these items, but the premiums for these costs may be out of range for a person with limited resources. Medicare Part D can help a person with limited resources pay for the medications he needs to maintain his health.
Qualifications
To qualify for the Medicare Part D program, which is designed to help low-income senior citizens, an unmarried person must not have resources more than 12,000 and a married couple must not have resources more than $25,000. Resources include income earned and property. The body governing the Medicare program has made some changes to what qualifies as resources when a person tries to qualify for Medicare Part D.
Eligiblity
Life insurance policies will no longer count as a resource. The Social Security Administration has changed what it considers income when determining if an applicant is eligible for Medicare Part D. Your direct income is still counted to determine eligibility, but if you receive help paying your rent, food costs, mortgage or property taxes. The changes mean that many senior citizens that did not previously qualify for Medicare part D can reapply to see if they do.
The application can be filled out online or at your local social security office. The staff at each office reviews the cases to determine an applicant’s eligibility for Medicare Part D. When the social security office completes the review, they notify the applicant of their decision by mail within a few weeks.
