What is Not Covered By Medicare?
Important information about what Medicare does not cover. Be aware of what health care services and procedures are not covered by Medicare.
While Medicare covers many medical expenses, some health care services are not covered by Medicare. In addition, it is important to remember that Medicare does not pay the full amount of covered health care services. If the Medicare beneficiary does not receive supplemental insurance that will help offset the costs of services not covered by Medicare, the beneficiary is responsible for payment of non-covered costs, such as premiums, deductibles, and co-insurance, as well as non-covered services.
Health Services not Covered by Medicare
•Health care received in another country.
Medicare is a United States Government Health Plan and will not cover any health care services provided to the Medicare beneficiary outside of the United States.
•Dental Care
Medicare does not cover any form of dental care, such as cleanings, extractions, fillings, etc.
•Vision Care
Medicare does not cover any expenses for eyeglasses or costs associated with the fitting or prescribing of eyeglasses, with the exception of glasses prescribed after cataract surgery).
•Hearing Aids
Medicare does not cover any expenses associated with hearing aids, except in some cases of extreme hearing loss where the patient requires implants.
•Cosmetic Surgery
Medicare does not cover cosmetic surgery, with the exception of surgery to improve function of a malformation of the body.
•Alternative Medicine
Medicare does not cover acupuncture, experimental procedures, or chiropractic procedures. However, medical subluxation of the spine is covered.
•Transportation
Medicare does not cover most non-emergency transportation. Ambulance services will be covered if the service is medically necessary.
•Long-term Care
Medicare does not cover any long-term personal care services outside of skilled nursing care.
•Some Preventative Care
Medicare does not cover most routine preventative care services, such as immunizations, physical exams, etc.
•Non-Medical Services
Medicare does not cover any non-medical services, such as hospital telephones, televisions, private rooms etc.
Please note that the services not covered by Medicare are not limited to the health care services on this list.
