What Is New In 2010 For Medicare Supplement Plans?

For 2010 there are quite a few changes taking place for Medicare Supplement Plans. All of these changes will affect those who seek Medicare after June 1, 2010. For those who already have Medicare before this date, these changes will not affect these people.

New Part M

Of all the changes being implemented, people are most excited about the addition of two new parts to the Medicare Supplement Plans. These are parts M and N. Part M was created which is the same as plan D, however has a 50% coinsurance on the Part A deductible.



New Part N

A new part was also added to the medicare supplement plan, part N. This part is the same as part D, however will require that a $20 co-payment be paid at doctor’s office, and a $50 co-payment for hospital visits. These co-pays will apply after a $155 deductible is met. The good news about these particular added parts is that they are expected to be slightly less expensive than the original plan D.

Hospice Changes

Hospice will begin to be a basic coverage with the new changes. Plan K will cover 50%, while Plan L will cover 75% of the costs.

Part B Coinsurance

Due to parts K, L and N, co-payments and coinsurance will require a portion be paid by the patient. This will result in lower premiums for people taking part of this plan.

Medicare Supplement Plans No Longer Available

There are numerous plans that are no longer for sale, as they were found to contain aspects that were covered in other parts of the plans or altogether hard to understand. These are plans E, H, I and J.

Its important to remember that people who have their Medicare coverage already or prior to June 1, 2010 that these changes do not apply to them. For further information concerning the changes in your medicare supplement plan, contact your Medicare provider.

  1. This is the first time I’ve heard the Medicare Supplement plans referred to as “Part”. It could add more confusion. If you want more info simply google “Medicare Supplement N”, and you can see some more articles.
