What Is Medicare Supplement Plan A?

What Is Medicare Supplement Plan A? Let us explore this and find out. Medicare was created by Congress to help insure Senior Citizens once they reached retirement age. Upon its creation, it was discovered that it was not comprehensive and had holes or gaps in the coverage that it offer. To solve this, supplemental plans were created that could be purchased in addition to Medicare. These plans are created and standardized by the government and must contain the same basic elements.

What Are The Basic Elements In Plan A?

What Is Medicare Supplement Plan A? Plan A is the most basic of the supplement plans. Medicare Supplement Plan A includes hospitalization coverage. It will cover the co-payment that the senior will be responsible for under their Medicare Insurance and an additional 365 days of hospital coverage once their Medicare benefits are exhausted. As seniors age, illness becomes more prevalent. In the case of a serious illness, it is very easy to exhaust the coverage allowed under Medicare. This additional coverage will make the difference between having insurance coverage or a large hospital bill when you come out of the hospital. Be aware that this is just the room and board cost and not the additional testing and procedures that take place when you are in the hospital.

Other Medical Expenses

Medicare Supplement Plan A will assist with other medical expenses. Typically it will cover the coinsurance required for Medicare Part B and any co-payments that are required for medical care obtained outside of the hospital. This is for test or treatment that take place at the doctors office. It will also pay for three pints of blood each year. If you require more than three pints you will be billed for it. Medicare Supplement Plan A will also pay for the Medicare Part A coinsurance required for hospice. Although these may seem to be very simple expenses, they can add up very quickly and create large bills for you or your family to pay.
