The window of opportunity for Medicare Part D initial enrollment is a total of seven (7) months to include three months before the month an individual turns sixty-five, the month of the sixty-fifth birthday and three months following the month of his sixty-fifth birthday.

The window of opportunity for initial enrollment is a total of seven (7) months. If during that time period the person does not sign up for Medicare Part D he may be faced with a penalty should he decide to enroll in Medicare Part D at a later date. The penalty for missing the Medicare Part D initial enrollment should the individual decide to sign up at a later date will probably appear in the form of higher premium payments when he does enroll.
