What If A Necessary Drug Is Not Covered Under Medicare Part D?

Medicare Part D covers drugs in many categories, but it does not cover all drugs that a patient might require. Even if Medicare Part D does not cover the necessary drugs, a doctor might find a way for a patient to receive the drugs that his patient needs. As long as the drug in question falls under a broad category, it is possible to write another prescription.

Going from Part A or B to Part D

Medicare Parts A and B cover more medications than are covered under Part D. If a patient switches from one form of coverage to another, the rules require a 30 day grace period. During this period, a doctor can switch a patient over to another necessary drug that is covered by Part D. The grace period often requires that the original patient be given a 30 day supply of the original prescription drug during this period.

When a Necessary Drug Is Not Covered by Medicare Part D

Sometimes a person elects to have Medicare Part D coverage and does not opt for Medicare Part A or B. If a necessary drug is not covered by Medicare Part D, the patient still has several options. Depending on the severity of the situation, a doctor may give out free samples of a needed drug to his patients. A person’s level of income may also allow for him or her to buy a supplemental insurance plan or a specific Medicare prescription plan. Odds are that one of these options will provide the patient what he needs. If a doctor expects the patient to need a necessary medication for long-term use, purchasing a supplemental insurance plans. A clinic with the proper licenses may give out the drugs on an as-needed basis. The worst case scenario is to skip the medication or to pay for a patient to pay for the prescription out of his own funds.
