Eligibility Time Period
If you do not enroll in a Medicare Part D plan during the time of eligibility, certain penalties may have to be paid to enroll at a later date. The eligibility time is from the 3 months prior to the 3 months after your 65th birthday. For those who receive Medicare as a result of disability, the eligibility period to enroll in a Medicare Part D plan is from the 3 months before to the 3 months after your 25th disability payment.
Do I have to enroll in a Medicare Part D Plan?
No. Enrollment in a Medicare Part D plan is not required. Other Medicare Health Plans may provide your prescription drug coverage. These other plans may be in the form of an old Medigap plan that was purchased before January of 2006, or a Medicare Advantage Plan.
Can I enroll in a Medicare Part D Plan and still continue my other prescription drug coverage?
No. If you have prescription drug coverage under an old Medigap plan or another Medicare Heath Plan such as a Medicare Advantage Plan, and you wish to enroll in a Medicare Part D Plan, you must contact the other health plan to have the prescription drug coverage removed. You cannot carry two different prescription drug plans through Medicare.
What if I miss the eligibility period to enroll in a Medicare Part D Plan?
If you fail to enroll in a Medicare Part D Plan at the time of eligibility, and wish to do so at a later time, you must wait until the enrollment period. The enrollment period for Medicare Part D is from November 15 to December 31 of each year.
