What Can I Do If I’m Declined For Medicare Supplemental Insurance?

Although it is uncommon, a person can get declined for Medicare Supplemental Insurance. A person does not need to panic if he gets declined for a Medigap policy. He has other options, some of which are more obvious than others.

There are not many reasons to get turned down for supplemental insurance, but they do occur from time to time. Different companies have different qualifications, and a good move is to look elsewhere. Some companies will find a way if a person threatens to walk away with the premiums, although this will not sway most people.

Do You Qualify for Medicaid?

Low-income recipients may qualify for their state’s Medicaid policy, which will take the place of a Medicare Supplemental Insurance policy. The program, administered separately by each state, receives federal funds and offers greater coverage than even Medicare does.

If a Medicare recipient had dual coverage in this fashion, Medicare becomes the primary payer and Medicaid gets put down as secondary. This option does not work for everyone, and a person who finds him over the income guidelines should choose the next one.

Find a New Company

The federal government regulates the plans that private companies can offer Medicare Supplemental insurance. They do not regulate the requirements to get people into or out of the policy, and these requirements vary from company to company.

If a company chooses to decline a person for Medicare Supplemental Insurance, it will state the reasons for doing so. Shop around to see what the qualifications for other options are. Find a company that has different requirements and try then. Appealing the decision may work, but it is usually not worth the effort for most people. The chance of getting declined also gives people the chance to get better prices on his or her premiums.
