Where can I find out what the Medicare Requirements are?

Lyndon B. Johnson passed the legislation that allowed older Americans to have health insurance at a time in their life when a senior citizen’s health care coverage was most likely to decrease or be eliminated. Many people over the age of 65 use this government-sponsored program as their only form of health insurance. There are conditions under which a person can automatically qualify for Medicare, and there are circumstances under which a person of any age can apply for program.

Basic Medicare Requirements

The one Medicare requirement that cannot be surpassed is that a recipient must be receiving social security income. A disabled person must receive social security payment for two years before he qualifies for Medicare A person over the age of 65 and receiving benefits automatically qualifies for Medicare Coverage.
If you suffer from Lou Gehrig’s disease and a few other conditions, you qualify for Part A and Part B automatically. Patients suffering from kidney failure can receive medicare at any age. They must be on daily dialysis and require a transplant.

Income Limits

The Medicare requirements do not usually consider a person’s income, but one Medicare program does help recipients with limited applicants. The program should not be confused with Medicaid, which is a state run program that covers family with low income. A single person who makes under $12,000 qualifies, while the limits for a married couple are higher. The requirements for Medicare Part C, or Medicare Advantage Plans depend on the company that the individual chooses to get his insurance form. The premiums for each plan vary and will be based in part on an applicant’s salary.

Where to Get Information

Socialsecurity.gov lists the relevant requirements for Medicare Part A, Part B and Part D. Because Medicare Advantage plans are usually sold by a third party, they may have different eligibility requirements. If a senior citizen or a person who has been hospitalized for long periods of time is unsure if he qualifies for Medicare, he can call his local Medicare office to get more detailed information.
