How will Medicare Part D help Me?

Are you wondering what Medicare Part D is and what it can do to help you? It is really not that hard when it’s explained to you properly.

Just what is Medicare Part D?

Medicare Part D is a program that provides help with paying for prescription drugs. Part D is not provided with the traditional Medicare program. You must enroll in one of the hundreds of Part D plans available by private companies.

Can I do this at any time?

During the period from November 15 to December 31 people can enroll in a plan or change their plan. If you are already enrolled in a plan and do nothing your coverage will continue for the following year.

Can anyone get this coverage?

You must have Medicare Part A or Part B. If so you are eligible regardless of your income. You cannot be denied because of health reasons or prior prescription drug use.

Do I have to take this coverage?

If you have other drug coverage that is better than Medicare, you do not have to sign up because you probably will not need the program. If you do not have other coverage that is as good as Medicare and you delay applying you will have to pay a late fee that adds to the premium as long as you’re in the program.

So what do I get and how much does it cost?

A monthly premium varies according to the plan you select. There is also an annual deductible at about $300 before the coverage kicks in. It covers about 75% of your prescriptions in the initial period. This continues until your costs reach $2,700. You are responsible for 100% of the costs in the “converge gap”. That is when you drug costs reach the limit of the coverage period and ends when you spend $4,350 out of pocket in a year. After this, it covers 95% of the prescriptions costs during the “catastrophic period”. This is when you have reached the out of pocket spending limit and goes until the end of the year.
