How To Enroll In Medicare Part D?
The enrollment period of Medicare Part D is fast approaching. Do you know when it is? Do you know what to do? Here are some tips for making the procedure as painless as possible.
What is Part D?
Part D is the Medicare prescription drug coverage insurance. It helps to pay for both brand name and generic drugs at pharmacies or through mail order.
Can everyone get this coverage?
Yes as long as they are enrolled in Medicare part A and/or Part B. As long as you have Medicare, you are eligible. You can sign up for Medicare Part D any time from three months before you 65th birthday until three months after your 65th birthday. If you get Medicare because of a disability, you can join anytime after you have been receiving benefits for 25 months. If you do not sign up when you become eligible, you may have to pay a penalty if you wish to sign up later. If you wish to sign up now the next period you will be able to join is November 15 thru December 31, 2010. This period of time is the same annually.
I know when I can sign up now, how do I do it?
When you first become eligible you will receive paperwork and an application in the mail, you can fill it in and mail it back, call your local Medicare office and apply over the phone or apply on line at the Medicare website.
Is there extra costs for this?
Yes, you will pay a monthly premium, which varies by the plan you choose, and there is a yearly deductible, which for 2010 will be $310 a year.
What if I can’t afford the monthly premium?
If you cannot afford the premium due to limited resources and/or income there is help available from Medicare that will pay for most or all of your prescription drug costs.
You can contact your Social Security office or Medicare office for more information.
