How Do You Enroll In Medicare Part D?

Medicare is a complex health care system to understand, and many times people feel lost when it comes to enrolling in the different parts of Medicare. However, when enrolling in Medicare Part D there are a few simple rules to follow to ensure successful enrollment.

Steps to Take Before Enrolling in Medicare Part D

In order to be eligible to enroll in Medicare Part D, the applicant must first be enrolled in Medicare Part A before enrolling in Part D. Those who receive Social Security benefits or a railroad retirement disability benefits at age 65 are automatically enrolled. For those who do not receive either of these benefits, then the applicant must file an application. After completion and approval, the applicant then begins eligible for other parts of Medicare. During this time applications are also enrolled in Part B, which can be declined if the applicant wishes. However, enrollment in part A and B is required to enroll in part D of Medicare.

When to Enroll in Medicare Part D

Every year, November 15 to December 31, is the time of open enrollment. This is the time to enroll in the Medicare Part D, so as not to incur any penalties. Enrolling when the applicant is first eligible is the easiest route to go. For those who are enrolled in another credible drug coverage program, you can switch to Plan D within 63 days of ending the previous plan. This can be done outside the open enrollment dates. However, be sure that the old plan is considered a credible drug coverage plan.

Penalties can incur when these instructions are not followed. If not enrolling when first eligible, a fee may be incurred for every year of not participating. This fee will also be applied for those who do not have continuous coverage under Medicare Part D.
