How Do I Have My Medicare Benefits Changed?

A Medicare recipient can change his health insurance coverage, but only at certain times of the year.

Medicare offers a person a six-month window in which he can change his Medicare benefits. From March to September, a recipient must stick with the current programs he is currently enrolled in. The only exception to the rule is Medicare Part D, which ends its period of coverage when a person no longer meets the limited resource guidelines. A person can start coverage in this program if his income decreases to fall within the guidelines for Medicare Part D coverage.

Two Periods of Enrollment

Medicare allows two periods of enrollment. The Open Election option lets a person choose the plans that he or she wants. The period starts on November 15 and ends on December 31. The Open Enrollment Period runs from January 1 to March 31 of the year. A person cannot make changes to his Medicare coverage between March 31 and November 15 unless his income changes.

The Open Election Option

If a recipient wants to have his Medicare benefits changed in a broad fashion, he must do so during the Open Election coverage. A recipient can use the months to determine the coverage that will work for him. The recipient can change his coverage anytime during this period, but only the final decision will be enacted. The changes will start in January of next year.

The Open Enrollment Option

If a recipient wants to have his Medicare benefit changed more quickly, he must do so during the open enrollment period. The Open Enrollment works best to cover gaps in coverage that an individual missed during the open election period. The changes take effect the month after you decide to make changes to your Medicare benefits. A person who needs to make changes to his medicare benefits any other time cannot do so under normal circumstances.
