How Do I Apply For Medicare?
Are you 65 and about to retire? Have you already applied for Social Security? Are you wondering how to apply for Medicare?
What exactly is Medicare anyway?
It is a health insurance program that is funded by the federal government. It was originally designed to make sure that the elderly had medical coverage. Today you may also be eligible if you have certain disabilities.
What makes me eligible besides being elderly?
You are eligible when you turn 65 years old, are disabled (and receiving Social Security Benefits), or suffering from chronic kidney disease (usually you must be on dialysis).
What if I have been a homemaker my whole life, can I still get Medicare?
Yes, as long as your spouse has worked at least 10 years in a position that had the coverage and you meet the above criteria.
Is it free?
If you are 65 or older and getting Social Security or if you are disabled there is no cost for Medicare Part A. If you are disabled you must have been receiving Social Security for twenty-four months.
Will I need coverage other than part A?
You might and you may want to consider purchasing the expanded coverage called Part B for about $50 a month. This fee comes directly from your Social Security check. More information on this program usually comes with your Medicare card.
So how exactly do I go about applying for it?
If you are 65 and getting Social Security you will be enrolled and receive a Medicare card in the mail about three months before your 65th birthday. If you are not receiving Social Security and still would like to apply, do so about three months before your 65th birthday. If you miss this period, you have to wait, until the following general enrollment period after your 65th birthday. You can call the Social Security Administration to obtain the forms or go directly to your local Social Security Administration office. Make sure you bring identification when you apply.
