I know how to enroll in Medicare, but I do not know how to enroll in a Medicare Supplemental Plan. When and how can I enroll in a Medicare Supplemental Plan?

Enrolling in Medicare is automatic for most individuals. The individual need do nothing in most cases to enroll in Medicare. When he turns 65 he is automatically enrolled unless he is still working. If he is still working he will need to contact Medicare to enroll. That is the easy part. But, how does an individual enroll in a Medicare Supplemental Plan?



How Can I Enroll in A Medicare Supplemental Plan?

Unlike Original Medicare, Medicare Supplemental Plans must be purchased from a private insurer. It is entirely up to the individual to decide if he wants to enroll in a Medicare Supplemental Plan. Additionally, if he decides to enroll in a Supplemental Insurance Plan he must initiate the enrollment by finding the insurer with the plan he wants to purchase and paying the premiums.

When Should I Enroll in A Medicare Supplemental Plan?

Medicare Supplemental Insurance Plans should be purchased during the open enrollment period of an individual’s Medicare eligibility. It is incumbent on the individual to reveiw the plans available in his region, locate the government contracted private insurer, and purchase the plan from the insurer. This should be done during the seven month period in which he has open enrollment in Medicare.

I Found the Supplemental Plan I Want, Now What Do I Do?

Once the individual finds the Medicare Supplemental Insurance plan that best suits his needs he should shop for the best premiums for that particular plan. Since these plans are offered through private insurers premiums may vary among companies. When the plan and best premiums have been found the individual should purchase the Medicare Insurance Supplement and begin paying his monthly premiums.
