How Can I Avoid High Co-Pays and Other Out of Pocket Expenses While On Medicare?

Avoid high co-pays and out of pocket expenses by using the network providers approved by Medicare and by enrolling in supplemental plans.

What Are Network Providers?

Network providers are health care providers who have been approved by Medicare. Before you make an appointment be sure your health care provider accepts Medicare. If your provider accepts Medicare, you will then only have to pay a co-payment for their services.

Enroll In Medicare Supplemental Plans

Medicare Part A and B do not cover all medical expenses you may incur. By enrolling in a supplemental plan you can avoid high co-pays and other out of pocket expenses. These plans are also called Medicare Advantage Plans or Medicare Part C. These plans are similar to PPO’s and HMO’s. This means that you may need a referral to see a specialist. They also may require you to go to providers that are within their network. If you choose a non-network provider your co-pay will be much higher. Some of these plans require a premium per month, but your out of pocket expenses will be lower because of the coverage they offer.

A Prescription Drug Plan Can Save You Money

By enrolling in the Medicare Prescription Drug Plan or Medicare Part D, you can save a substantial amount of money. These plans help to cover some of the cost of your prescription drugs prescribed by your doctor. You can avoid high co-pays for medications by enrolling in a prescription drug plan. These plans also give you a much larger access to the medications you need to stay healthy because the medications will cost you less. In order avoid paying a penalty and incurring excessive out of pocket expenses, you will need to sign up for Medicare Part D when you become eligible for Medicare.
