Does Social Security Pay For Any Part Of Medicare Part B?

Social Security does not cover the costs of Medicare Part B. Medicare Part B is deducted from his benefits check.

It is natural to wonder if Social Security will pay for any part of Medicare Part B. A person who is 65 and ready to retire can apply for Medicare benefits at the same time he applies for his social security benefits. As long as he paid Social Security and Medicare taxes, he qualifies for both programs.

Medicare Part B

Qualifying for Social Security and Medicare Part B does not mean that one program will pay for the other, however. Medicare Part B will cover doctor visits, services, supplies, lab work and similar services, but the Medicare Part B is not covered by Social Security. The premiums for Medicare Part B are usually deducted from a Social Security recipient’s benefit check.

Out Of Pocket Expenses

The programs do not pay for each other. The cost of health insurance will come out of the payer’s pocket or directly off of his benefits check. Medicare Part B only covers these services partially. A wise person will still need to budget to take care of his medical costs. State or federal programs may help a Medicare recipient with low incomes pay the high deductibles. In some cases, a Medigap insurance policy can fill the gap.

Use Your Resources

When you apply for Social Security or Medicare Part B, the office staff can help answer any questions you might have. If you have access to the Internet, the ssa.gov website has documents the user can download and read later that answer most of his questions. Being enrolled in Medicare Part B does not disqualify a patient from participating in state programs, such as Medicaid.

The government wording can be confusing for some. If you enroll in a Medigap plan, the employees are trained to understand the differences and can supply additional information if you need it.
