Medicare is a federal program available to those citizens, sixty-five and older, who qualify for Social Security benefits at retirement. Some recipients of both Medicare and Medicaid may have no co-payments if it is determined that their disabilities are total and their income is low enough to meet certain criteria as required by the state. Others may be required to pay a small amount as a co-pay. The determination is made based on the state evaluation of the person’s disabilities and income. In some cases, Medicaid will cover all the costs of prescription medicines.

In most cases states who have determined a person receiving Medicare benefits to be eligible for Medicaid assistance, prescription medicines will be fully paid by the Medicaid benefits. However, it is best to check with the state caseworker to verify the amount Medicaid will pay for a specific case.
