Are Medicare prescription drug plan premiums taxable?

Absolutely not! Medicare prescription drug plans are about saving you money, not taxing you. We advice studying the plans and choosing wisely.

Those 65 and older who are in higher income brackets are the least served by these plans. If you have health issues that demand lots of expensive medications, acquaint yourself with the type of plans shown below. Be aware, however, Medicare prescription drug premiums, as well as tax debates, will change when the hotly debated health care reform laws are on the books. To be eligible for part D — the drug premium section — you must be covered by Medicare A and B. These cover hospital care and doctor visits.

Two basic types of Medicare Prescription Drug Plans (PPDs)

Type one attaches Drug cost to basic Medicare, to Medicare Cost Plans, to Medicare fee-for-service (PFFS) and to Medicare Medical Savings Account (MSA), Plans. Type two covers Medicare Advantage Plans such as Health Maintenance Organizations and Preferred Provider Organization plans (PPO).

Which type should I choose?

Decision making where drug costs are concerned is tough. Each person is different. If you are eligible for Medicare coverage and you are signed in to their system you will be receiving an annual Medicare and You booklet with every thing spelled out. Look it over carefully and get to know where you fit into the system. On page 62 of the 2010 booklet– the research booklet for this information — will fill you in. It will be up to you to decide which plans are most advantageous to you.

Do these plans differ in each state?

Each state has differing plans but basically they must follow the guidelines as outlined by the federal government. In the above mentioned booklet, a description of the plans of each state will be where you begin your involvement in Medicare prescription drug plan premiums. Every thing you need to who to call, where to call, and how much you can expect to pay is listed in this book. To further learn about your chosen plan, research on the Internet.
