Are All Medicare Supplemental Insurance Plans The Same?

What Should a Medicare look for in a Medicare Supplemental Plan? Are all Medicare Supplemental Plans the same? These are questions that are often asked.

Medicare Supplemental plans cover prescriptions and other services that Medicare does not cover or does not fully cover. With so many plans being offered how does a Medicare recipient know which plan to choose?

Are All Medicare Supplemental Insurance Plans The Same?

The answer is no. All Medicare Supplemental Insurance plans are not the same. For that reason it is important to choose wisely when selecting the Supplemental Insurance plan. Medicare Supplemental Insurance Plans are known as Medigap. They are designed to cover some or all of the services not covered by the basic Medicare plan. Medicare is a government sponsored and run insurance plan. The Medigap plans are privately operated insurance plans designed to close the “gap” in Medicare coverage.

How Many Medicare Supplemental Insurance Plans Are There?

The Medicare Supplemental plans are standardized by Federal and state law. However, there are twelve supplemental plans from which to choose. Each of the twelve Medicare Supplemental Insurance plans has a designated letter A through L to denote the benefits. All plans that fall under the letter A have the exact same benefits regardless of the state where the person lives.

Do All Medicare Supplemental Insurance Plans Cost the Same?

The cost of the plans vary from state to state. While all Medicare Supplemental Insurance Plan A benefits are the same the cost does vary from state to state. Due to the variety of benefits available in each of the twelve plans Plan A and Plan B will probably not have the same cost even in the same state. The Medicare recipient looking for a Medicare Supplemental Insurance Plan should first find the plan that fills his medical needs and expectations. Once the supplemental plan is chosen the prudent Medigap shopper will look for the private insurance company with the lowest rates in his area.
