With both parents in assisted living, will Medicaid still cover costs?
When two parents are in assisted living facilities Medicaid may cover a portion of the expenses.
When someone has both parents that need to go to an assisted living facility the costs can be phenomenal. Medicaid and Medicare may assist with the medical bills, but only Medicaid may contribute to the daily living expenses.
Medicaid Coverage
Medicaid will cover medical costs and some of the normal daily care of an assisted living facility. The main problem with Medicaid is that it will not cover all of the costs of someone in an assisted living facility. The other problem comes when there are two parents in the facility, most of the costs will be paid out of pocket, and it is usually the responsibility of the children.
Depending on the income and assets of the individuals some states will allow Medicaid to cover a portion of the facility costs. Some only cover for nursing home care and not for an assisted living facility at all. Some states also have a cap on the monthly payment, regardless of the costs.
Conclusion
The best thing to do is to save for the parent’s future care, and utilize every resource available to assist with the financial costs of elderly care facilities. Medicaid will cover a portion of the costs, but the rest of the fees must be paid from the children. It is best to put in place something now that can assist with the cost of future care. Medicaid and Medicare can assist with whatever cost is there and private insurance along with other programs built for the elderly. With both parents in an assisted living facility the costs will be great. The best way to prepare for this is to set up a fund for the parents for their future medical care just in case Medicare and Medicaid does not cover it.
