Will Medicare Take My Home To Pay For Nursing Home Care?

Medicare will help pay for short term stays only. They do not cover long term care in nursing care facilities. Because of the fact of it being short term, your home is safe with Medicare. Medicare does not take a persons home to pay for nursing home care.

What Medicare Covers

Medicare covers short-term nursing home care during treatment or recovery. This is following a hospital stay of at least 3 days. Only nursing home facilities with skilled, trained professionals working there are acceptable. Not all nursing homes will be accepted. Medicare has set up rigid rules to protect the residents of the nursing homes.

What Medicare Pays

Medicare will pay 100 % of the first 20 days that a person is in a nursing home facility. After that, if progress is continually being made, Medicare will pay approximately all but $114.50 per day of the bill. It is about 80%. and they will do this for up to 100 days. After the 100 days it is up to the resident to find another way to pay for the care.

Long Care Needs

Since Medicare is meant only for short-term stays, Medicare does not take a persons’ home to pay for nursing home care. Medicaid on the other hand might. Medicaid is set up for long-term care. They could take a persons home to offset the cost of long term nursing home care. Transferring your assets like your home and automobiles, to a trusted family member would be a wise move. This would protect your assets from Medicaid.
Home health care is another way to go for long care needs. Medicare will pay for this and again your house will be safe. You will need a doctors approval.

Thanks for the info on that. I wrote it off as just another expense, but I am going to examine it once again.
