What Is The Difference Between Medicare and Medicaid?

The key to proper coverage is knowing how Medicare and Medicaid can best meet the needs of your health care situation.

While Medicare and Medicaid are both programs that help to pay for health care, they are very different. Some of the biggest differences between Medicare and Medicaid are how they are run, who is covered and what services each program covers.

What is the Medicaid Program?

Medicaid is a state run program that helps low income people pay for health related care. This includes women who are pregnant; children under the age of 19; people who are age 65 and over; people who are blind; people with disabilities; and people who need nursing home care.

This program helps to pay for any health care needs such as doctor visits, hospitalization, prescription medications, medical equipment, medical testing, dental care, optical care, prenatal care, immunizations, and any other medical needs or devices that are physician recommended. This program may also help pay for homemaker and personal care in the home, if a patient is unable to meet these needs themselves. Another benefit of this program is that it may help pay for Medicare premiums if an individual is unable to do so themselves.

What is the Medicare Program?

The Medicare Program is a federally run program that helps to pay for health care also. This program helps people who are age 65 or older; people of any age who suffer from kidney failure or long term kidney disease; or people who are permanently disabled and are unable to work. You must be a legal citizen of the United States and have lived here for 5 years to be eligible to receive Medicare benefits.

This program has several different plans available to chose from. The Medicare Part A plan is usually available for free and helps to cover costs such as hospitalization. There are co payments that are required for these plans.
